Times Books: The Times Atlas of the 20th Century
The Times Atlas of the 20th Century, was published by Times Books, a divison of HarperCollins Publishers in 1996. I am credited on the opening page as a “Cartographic consultant”. What this meant in practice was that I was involved both in the devising of the structure of the atlas and the compilation of its maps. I liaised throughout the work with Thomas Cussans and Philip Parker, editors. I researched for and compiled approximately one third of the maps in the atlas, but this did not mean that I played no role in the creation of the content of the rest of the maps. Many of those that were not the result of my compilation in the first place had to be altered substantially after I proofread them.
